FOOD DEPARTMENT'S POLY GRADED BAGS AND EXPLOITATION

Muhammad Shamim Akhter,30 May, 2011:

A law was made in 2002 which banned to produce, market and use polythene shopping bags. From 1 March, 2002 this law became enforceable all over Bangladesh . Since then polythene bags were rarely seen except to the bags exporting with garments goods. Although it mainly concentrated to polythene shopping bags, the concerned quarters urged GOB to suspend the usage of all kinds of polythene products. Instead of it, they urged to use jute bags or any improved biodegradable products made from the raw which is available and then jute was highlighted in the discussion and various peoples submitted different substitute products made from jute and the concerned Ministry arranged different programs. According to the National Agricultural policy -1999, it has been committed to produce and supply supplementary agricultural products and other agri products for the industry. Furthermore, the policy also urged to process agri-products and set up various industries based on agriculture. On that part, the policy of banning polythene commenced from 2002 and the country was gradually inclined to the jute goods. Even in 2010, we have the evidence that Food Department distributed rice in jute sack, however, we are surprised that in 2011, the department aforesaid has distributed rice in poly graded bags which is completely import basis and a blow to the jute products. In addition, we see the random use of polythene all over Bangladesh and it has been allowed to be used without the control of the authority and the policy the GOB is obliged to be committed is recklessly being denied and more violent aspect is that without being annulled the Act of 2002, the concerned authority has been collecting endowments from different business groups. If the GOB thinks polythene is good for health and environment, then no excuse ma debar them to annul the Act and nourish the usage of the polythene. Although the illiterate mass is less aware of the exploitation with the law and punishment, we the, conscious citizens can not justify such horrendous exploitation using the mechanism of the state. We hope the GOB must move on the right track.
